From Campo de' Fiori the ancient city opens up a short walk or a few bus stops away. The Colosseum rises at the end of Via dei Fori Imperiali, and behind it the Forum unfolds — temples, basilicas and triumphal arches that were the centre of the world two thousand years ago.
Allow a good half day, comfortable shoes and a hat in summer. The ticket covers Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill, where the city was founded. Booking in advance is essential in high season.
In the evening the area empties and takes on a quiet, almost intimate atmosphere. Back at the B&B, the lanes of Campo de' Fiori offer dinner among trattorias and wine bars.
